Whether it is a lack of time, money, or interest, we seem to like to “wing it” when it comes to our financial future. Fortunately, we don’t have to have the intellect and expertise of an architect to take steps to blueprint the kind of financial future that we want. It really takes just a short amount of time to key into the “desires of our heart” (Psalm 37:4). It begins with financial goals.
Can you imagine how a track and field runner might feel if he wasn’t sure where his finish line for the race was? He would certainly be filled with sense of anxiety and frustration. When we accumulate money toward an uncertain financial goal, we, too, can experience the anxiety and frustration of not knowing how much is “enough.” The runner without a finish line is much more likely to “over-run” than to “under-run” to the prize. Along with the anxiety that comes from not knowing how much is enough to save for a goal, there is a tendency to over-accumulate to provide a greater measure of safety. As a result we may leave other important areas of our financial life unaddressed. More about reaching your financial finish line…
Stewardship isn’t a word that we use today in our common vocabulary. But the essence and definition of biblical financial stewardship is something that every follower of Christ must take seriously. Ron Blue, the president of Kingdom Advisors, has defined biblical stewardship as: The use of God-given resources for the accomplishment of God-given goals and objectives*
When you think about it, this definition doesn’t only have to do with money. Not only do we have treasure (financial resources) to accomplish God-given goals, but also time, talent, and our temple (body). So stewardship relates to our entire life.
